"Wonderdog" tells a great story (a couple times a year) about how when a guy gets his first big league hit his team-mates all sign a ball and write all sorts of crap on it and basically make a mess of it. They gather around and hand it to him and watch the air come out of him as he tries not to look too disappointed. Then they give him his real ball.

[/ QUOTE ]

My coaches did that to one of my teammates in Little League. Except, the morons did it with the actual ball. The kid's dad almost started a riot in front of everyone.

One coach wrote something like "Next time, open your eyes," and another wrote, "Here's to your first and last HR." The other coach just put a big "X" with black magic marker (I don't know what he meant." BTW, our coaches were former local high school players about 20 years old.

i think you'd be a dirtbag to haggle

you'd ruin any sort of sentimental value the ball had by haggling - i'd hope that the player, if he heard of this, would tell you to keep it.

lol.

Rep- I understand you have X's homerun ball?

You- Yeah I caught it!

Rep- Well since its his first HR, he'd really like to have that ball. In return, we have a new ball signed by the team and 2 tickets to a game next month.

You- You think it'd be possible to get four tickets instead of two?

Rep- I'm sure that could happen.

You- Great!

Yeah, what a dirtbag!

that's obv not what i meant

i meant team: 'hey, want free tickets to a game?'

you: 'yeah how's about 5 grand instead, this is obviously very important stuff we're dealing with here'

your example isn't haggling, it's asking.

If I was at a Cardinal game and caught some rookie's first HR ball, I would be happy with a signed bat/ball/jersey/photo combo from Pujols that I could mount on my wall.

"Hi, Shelley/Chris Duncan! yeah, i caught your home run ball. if you want it back you'll have to go in the locker room and steal Derek Jeter's/Albert Pujols' glove."

I'd give it back, probably just want to meet the guy and shake his hand.

Now Bonds 756, or some other big number homer, that I'm using to get rich.

Just give it to him. Frank Thomas hit his milestone HR in opposing park. The fan just gave it to him and Thomas made sure they guy received autograph everything and mentioned how classy the fan was in an interview. Now Barrys' Ball....
