This is very sad, I wish the news media would spend more time trying to cover this story. If we really want to want to be the country that is the beacon of freedom in this world we should be reporting this stuff and exposing this government.

There are only a handful of photos getting out of Myanmar. All the photos I see on blogs are showing up on CNN. The internet is down now. There is a rumor that an Army Commander refused orders to shoot at civilians and and that some soldiers are wearing sandals as a sign of their support of the protesters.

I was just about to post that. This could lead to all-out civil war. Really disturbing: "reliable source - Army Division 22 (which was used during 1988 uprising) has been called back to Yangon"

There were reportedly thousands (possibly 10s of thousands) of civilians killed in 1988 but exact numbers are obviously impossible to come by.

Military sources in Rangoon are claiming that the regime's number two, General Maung Aye (right), has staged a coup against Than Shwe, and that his troops are now guarding Aung San Suu Kyi's home. A meeting between him and Suu Kyi is expected. Maung Aye is army commander-in-chief and a renowned pragmatist.

Our diplomatic sources are also telling us that Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved to a police academy compound outside Rangoon, where she is expected to meet Maung Aye. As yet, though, we have no independent confirmation of this development
