yesyesyes Chestnut has emerged as a true American hero. I remember watching his coming out party (iirc, 40 + hot dogs) and thinking that he could someday be the best.

I think we may have to organize a 2+2 gathering in Coney Island on July 4th for this "history in the making" event. Diablo, you in?

sam,

I think Chestnut just made a huge mistake. He eats 54, he gets the record and then surprises Kobiyashi to take the title. But unless he has a 60+ performance ready to uncork at Coney Island, he just showed his hand and will once again have to be content with second place in the Big Show.

ED - I empathize with your suggestion of the reverse Pearl Harbor move, but its very possible that asking Chestnut to eat only 54 at this stage is like asking LeBron James to only score 20 points per game. It is very difficult for athletes at the top of their game to throttle down in a competitive setting. In fact, that's often how people get hurt. A bruised esophagus or something would be disastrous for him right now.

sam,

Mark my words. Kobayashi is not losing his title unless Chestnut goes over 62.

Isn't that the guy who was at the Nathan's competition last year? The one the announcer started calling a "great American" for his eating accomplishments.

This really reminds me of an episode of king of the hill, otherwise I find this stuff stupid and disgusting.

If the weather conditions are right...

personally I like a slight overcast, with temperatures in teh 60s when I gorge myself.

Diablo - so I'm assuming you also watched the MTV True Life with Kobayashi? (Which was awesome.) Didn't Kobayashi struggle to get to his 54 last year?

Al,

Yes, that was a great show.

As for Kobayashi, he's just like Jordan or Tiger or Federer. It'll be a whole different ballgame when there's someone there really pushing him.
