Joey Chestnut Destroys Kobayashi's World Record!!!

U.S. champ Joey Chestnut surpassed the record of 53 3/4 hot dogs held for six years by Takeru Kobayashi of Japan by wolfing downing a whopping 59 1/2 wieners in 12 minutes Saturday, the East Valley Tribune in Tempe reported. By setting the world record at Nathan's Famous 4th of July International Hot Dog-Eating Competition in Tempe, Chestnut also officially qualified to face off
against Kobayashi at the July 4 championship. But Chestnut admits he will have to strain his body to at the New York title event.

"I'm going to keep pushing my body and maybe I can beat him," Chestnut said. The emcee at Chestnut's record-breaking performance said the competitor even predicted a special performance prior to the event. "I've been talking to him and he said, 'Unless I have a really bad day I'm
gonna break (the record),'" competition official Ryan Nerz told the newspaper.

This is really a mind-blowing performance by the young American. Chestnut really looks to be setting himself up to be perfectly primed for July 4. Kobayashi is the master of intimidation, however, and casts a long shadow on any competitive eating event which he enters. Can Chestnut withstand the pressure this year and finally beat the unbeatable?

In any event, I think this has put Kobayashi on notice, and may only serve to wake the sleeping giant. If the weather conditions are right, with his first real threat in a number of years, I think Kobayashi can break 60 this year. I think the 4th of July will be really special this year!

yesyesyes Chestnut has emerged as a true American hero. I remember watching his coming out party (iirc, 40 + hot dogs) and thinking that he could someday be the best.

I agree completely. As of right now, he is a paper champion, and will not be recognized until he can beat Kobayashi heads up.

Note: according to his Wikipedia entry, Chestnut trains for events by eating two pounds of cheese fries in 5 minutes.
