Default X360 - Geometry Wars

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geometr..._Retro_Evolved

I'm sure many of you who own 360s have already played Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, but I wanted to bring it up for those who haven't. Since I only recently bought a 360, it's still pretty new to me. I'm not going to try to write a full review here, as I no write good.

GW is fantastic, especially for the price. It's only 400 points (about $5) on xbox live arcade. This game feels like it would have been one of the most popular arcade games ever if it had been released during the height of their popularity. But how to describe it...

You control a ship, and lots of relatively fast moving shapes try to slam you from all directions. Being touched means instant death. Your ship can move and fire in any direction, and ammo is unlimited. Each of the enemy shape types (ships) have distinct behavior that will help you react the right ways to all the eventual chaos on the screen. Think smarter, faster Asteroids mixed with lots of pretty colors, black holes, and better control.

The high scores on the xbox live leaderboard are ridiculously high. Somehow these people have managed to accumulate a few hundred million points. At this point, I'm still not able to break 500k. It just gets a little too fast for me to keep up with. For those of you who have played this, what's your high score? I'm sitting at 440,955.

That's impressive.

Now that Ive seen how much harder it gets, I'm not anticipating any 100 million scores for me in the near future.

This game seems like it would get extremely boring, very fast.

What keeps up the interest and replayability?

I honestly have no clue, the game just is awesome. My high is 597k, and I have no clue how people score in the hundreds of millions.

A guy made a clone of this game for the PC and released it freely. It's called Grid Wars 2. It plays different from the XBox version, quite a bit slower and a little more emphasis on black holes. Works great if you have an xbox360 controller or any other dual analog controller hooked up to your PC.

You could make the same argument about Tetris. Simple games have the capability to be interesting and engrossing.

Yeah you are right. I got bored with Tetris too, but that's just me. I guess this Geometry Wars game wouldn't hold my interest for very long. I'm more into sports and action/adventure.

If you can, you should give it a try if you liked any of the old school arcade shooters like Galaga. It's closer to that than tetris... more action than puzzle. As is the case with many games, watching GW is far less entertaining than actually playing it. I'm not sure how long I could watch someone else play Pac-Man, but I can still enjoy playing it for hours if I'm in the right mood.

Heh. The video sniper linked shows the game as difficult as it can get. There's a lot less on the screen during the earlier parts of the game. Here's one that starts at the beginning:

His goal here was to score as many points as he could without moving.
