Help me help my dog

So this is my dog Coco (The chocolate lab)

She has no idea she has a tail. The stone walls and metal table legs and other things in our house have taken their toll on the tail she likes to wag so much. You can kind of see the effects of it on her tail in this picture.


Well the situation has finally worsened to where she has an open cut on her tail. Has anyone had a similar problem here? She doesn't seem to be affected by it, but she definitely leaves her mark. Think red paintbrush white walls. She even got blood on my girlfriend's jeans. Any ideas on what to do? I tried wrapping it up with gauze and athletic tape from my first aid kit, but that didn't last too long. As I recently acquired this guy- Mario. He's a 6 month old lab mix and likes to chew everything and pulls it off. Coco tried to pull it off twice as well.


I guess I'll call the vet tomorrow, as she once told me the tip of her choclate labs tail broke off. She said it was actually flinging blood everywhere. That won't help me til tomorrow when I get home from work though.

The coffe table stays pretty clear. Coco's tail is to the coffe table as Godzilla's tail is to Japan.

I think your best bet is just a sock and really tight rubber bands. She'll want to pick at it, so you'll have to be strict or get one of those plastic cones. [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

If problem persists, this is the best option, consult your vet.

And use hydrogen peroxide on your blood staind walls.

My lab is the exact same way. wags the [censored] out of her tail and it looks like it hurts but she never seems to care.

Id say just ask the vet what they reccomend.

Cuts on dog's tails can be a big problem. They bleed a lot and are very difficult to heal.

I'm curious to learn what your vet will recommend.

This is true. Cuts to a dogs tail can be serious as they'll bleed a lot. Sometimes if its bad they will dock the tail just below the cut.

My dog(also a chocolate lab) recently got its tail caught in a door.

To contain the bleeding when it happened i put a sock over it and wrapped it with medical tape so we could get her to the vet. DO NOT USE RUBBER BANDS as someone jokingly (i hope) recommended above, you'll just create a tourniquet and the vet will take the tail off. Fortunately in our case it was not necessary for them to remove any portion of her tail.


Also we used liquid bandage. This worked very well in conjuction with a firmly wrapped bandage or sock.

You'll have to keep her from chewing it (cone collar) and also keep your other dog from bothering it as well. Keep them separated if you must.

My dogs tail healed enough in ten days to remove the bandage.
