Re: Linux questions from a newb
I'm running SuSE 10.0 with KDE on an old desktop with a 1.4GHz Pentium 4 and 640mb memory. It runs fairly well -- not blazingly fast, but very usable. I initially had just 128Mb of memory, and it was very slow with KDE or Gnome (worse witg Gnome). Adding the memory made a considerable difference. If you want a Windows-like GUI, you want either Gnome or KDE, but they come with almost Windows-like hardware requirements. If you can settle for a lighter-weight GUI, which won't be quite as user-friendly, you can get by with quite a bit less hardware.

Not sure if a CD image will work on a dvd... however I just downloaded Ubuntu Gutsy dvd image so that is an option.

[/ QUOTE ] I got it to work, to boot into Ubunto. the mouse and keyboard worked, but I couldn't get any network connection working (ethernet or wifi). I figured I would need to install drivers for my wifi card (will this be hard?) but I was surprised I couldn't get my regular network card to work. anyone have thoughts? I want to try setting up my machine to dual-boot (though that may be too ambitious). but before I go through this painful exercise (for me) I'm trying to get a comfort level that I'll be able to get my internet workng in ubunto |

Re: Linux questions from a newb
Ubuntu has a restricted drivers manager which in theory should make it a snap to install wireless drivers (I don't use wireless so I can't say for sure). The ethernet port is odd though as it should work out of the box (assuming you're using DHCP)
