Default question about that virus link

i know someone who is continuing to have problems.

we are both techmorons. here's the question. in the thread regarding this, respected posters were saying the solution is format c:. then in the next post, other respected posters are calling the author of the virus inept because it is an easy fix.

how can anything that requires reformatting your c drive be classified as an inept virus with an easy fix?

tia

I don't know the particulars of this virus, but I know geeks and often times they will propose something that is not quite accurate if they can say it in an authoritative voice, scare the straights, or just make a safe guess. Formatting C is always going to work but is a tad bit extreme.

that's a pretty extreme suggestion. i can't imagine not trying every other fix suggested before i did this.

i'm now using carbonite.com so i am not too worried. however, he had no backup.

i think the response to reformat comes from the natural paranoia of this being a gambling related site and somebody target $$ with a keylogger or the likes.

has anyone forwarded the offending file to norton or mcafee for analysis?

Granny, some people haven't discovered virus protection software yet and still think format c: is the proper cure for all ills...

you'll find all the info you need in this thread

it'll be long and tedious but it's easier than reformatting.
