Cashier's perogative?

Saturday night grocery shopping. I get everything on my list but not everything I need. All lines are long, I jump in behind three Asian chicks who have one cart. I notice the (white) female cashier give them a [censored] look, then they split their order 3 ways. The first and best looking of the Asian girls buys the Pringles and some other snack. She'd look like a 10 after a six-pack--nice body. The next AG buys a half-rack of Corona--I'd hit it sober, but several beers would certainly help. Just a bit overweight. The third AG buys a six-pack of wine coolers--I'd be too drunk to perform here. The cashier asks the latter two for ID, sees that they're both over 21 and then asks the hot AG who only bought snacks for ID too. She is not 21 and the cashier refuses to sell alcohol to any of them. The cashier looked to be early twenties to me. I thought it was total BS. The white girl apologized and told them that she could get in big trouble if she sold it to them. Any grocery store employees out there? Is it true?

I'm pretty sure that's a legitimate issue - I've had a lot of people have me either get in seperate lines or just leave the store when they're buying becuase I don't look 21 (which is fine, since I'm not), for that exact reason.

I worked in a convenience store for a while in college. This is 100% correct, there is a term for this, but I can't remmeber what it is.

Possibly to prevent underage drinking?

It's a real rule and when I worked as a cashier in college someone at a nearby store got busted with this exact violation and the store lost it's liquor license for some time.
