Default Good/Cheap Casein

Anyone have a good product? I'm looking for something to drink before bed and maybe as part of breakfast. I have a whey-based protein shake that I'll keep using before and after workouts.

So, for this purpose, is 100% casein more or less what I want or 80% casein/20% whey?

Thoughts/Suggestions?

get the 100% casein for bed time...Use the whey in the morning. Generally when you drink casein it sits in your stomach (you can feel it somewhat) so you dont want to take it in the morning since you dont want to stack food on top of it. You dont need slow digesting protein for during the day since you will be able to eat every few hours

Optimum Nutrition sells a 100% casein protein for pretty cheap (I get all my stuff through dpsnutrition.com). Matt's right though, casein is a really heavy, slow digesting protein. You can even tell the difference just by how it mixes with water/milk; it is noticeably thicker. I would recommend taking it before bed.

Casein was too pricey for me. I switched to a container of lactose free, lowfat cottage cheese, which has a lot of casein in it.

http://www.dpsnutrition.net/get_item_on359.htm; 20.49/2lbs there. I eat a lot of cottage cheese myself just b/c I get sick of having too much powdered drinks throughout the day, but it's definitely not cheaper. It's 4.19/tub here in NYC (was like 2.50 back home in the Carolinas). And that 2 tubs will last me 5 nights?

There are some options here: http://www.trueprotein.com/product_listings.aspx?cid=22

I haven't tried it, but have seen lots of people recommend the milk protein isolate ($7.12/pound), I think it is approximately 80% casein, 20% whey. 80% or 100% casein, I think the difference is negligible.

Go to your local vitamin store and you can find a bottle for like $25. Since you shoudl really only be drinking the casein at night, it will last you long enough to be worthwhile.
