new music I like
the other "new music" thread seems to be a different kind of thread than this - but if you Mods think otherwise, feel free to move it over there.
some new stuff I like: The New Pornographers - Challengers These guys just keep getting better. Fantastic hooks, soaring harmonies, great, smart pop. My Rights vs. Yours Rilo Kiley - Under the Blacklight I love the mood these L.A. indie hipsters set...Jenny Lewis has a very sexy longing to her vocals. The Moneymaker (and no the subject of the video is NOT why I like these guys, dammit) Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga As with The NPs, Spoon just seems to keep getting better and better. They have a very unique yet accessible sound I'm pretty crazy about. The Underdog Kelly Willis - Translated From Love My favorite country gal, with a simple, soaring voice that cuts me to the bone. How this artist never became huge is beyond me. If I Left You (I couldn't find any video from her new album - this one is from her last CD, Easy) |

Re: new music I like
Ok, since I only talk about brand new CDs or music I've stolen in the EDF music thread:
Its a bit... different, but my two favorite CDs this year are from essentially the same group. The first is from the actual band, Animal Collective, and is called Strawberry Jam. Animal Collective - Peacebone Animal Collective - Fireworks If you even remotely enjoy either of those songs and get a chance to see them live sometime, do it. Their live show is amazing. One member, "Panda Bear" (Noah Lennox) explaining where the album name came from: [ QUOTE ] It was actually an idea that I had, sitting on an airplane, getting my tray of food. There's a little packet of strawberry jam on it-- this was, like, a year, year and a half ago. The sun was coming in through the airplane window, and I just looked at [it] and said, "Man, it'd be really sweet if we could get the music from the album to sound like [what] this looks like." I knew it was really sweet, tangy stuff, but it also has this real sharp quality to it. There was something futuristic looking about it, and I definitely wanted the album to have that sort of quality. Hopefully the music continues that sort of feeling. And the cover photo is an interpretation of that idea. [/ QUOTE ] The second is that same person's solo album which was released earlier this year. Panda Bear - Person Pitch Panda Bear - Bros I'll second Dom's first three albums as all being good. I'm going to have to listen to the last one since I have a soft spot for good country music, probably because its so rare these days. I'll stop for now. I usually go overboard when I start talking about new music I like. |

go overboard, go overboard!
I think I might like Animal Collective...and that Panda Bear song sounds like something Brian Wilson might write... |

Re: new music I like
Ok, here is more:
Okkervil River - The Stage Names I only started listing to this band a few months ago when I discovered their last CD, Black Sheep Boy, which was released in 2005. After listening to it a bunch and deciding I liked them, I realized that their next CD was coming out within a couple weeks. I would classify this music as indie/folk rock. Stream the whole album from their myspace page: Myspace - Okkervil River Check out "Our Live Is Not A Movie Or Maybe" and "John Allyn Smith Sails" to get a good idea of what they are about. Maybe I like that second song more because I first learned about Smith my freshman year (at the University of Minnesota) when someone mention the crazy poet who jumped off the bridge I would walk over twice a day. The National - Boxer For those follow new music (specifically indie rock) you've definitely heard of this and most likely have it. If you haven't, check it out. Their lead singer, Matt Berninger, has a wonderful baritone and their music suits it perfectly. Again, you can stream some of their music on their myspace page: MySpace - The National Start with the first song off of this album, "New Empire." They are playing at the Fine Line in Minneapolis tonight and I really really wanted to go but I thought I started flag football tonight, it is obv. canceled (thuderstorm + tornado watch!) and the show is hella sold out |

Re: new music I like
I am going to check those out, for sure
Tegan and Sara-- The Con Just an excellent album. It is one of very few albums I can say I like just about every track. The Sounds-- Dying to Say This to You. Another excellent album that seems to get stuck in my head quite often. There is a bunch of new music I enjoy. Just not many entire albums. |

I love them, and somehow nobody told me that they had a new album. This one isn't totally new, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Is Is EP. "Down Boy" is up there with their best songs, fo' sho. |
