Re: Debate about batting avg vs OBP
Batting Average.
The hardest thing to do in all of sports is to hit a pitch where a fielder is not, and that is what BA measures. Getting walks only matters if you can steal a base, else you are just clogging up the basepaths. |

Re: Debate about batting avg vs OBP
It depends. If you want to know how exactly how often a guy gets a hit, BA is a better stat. If you want to know who is the better player, OBP is the better stat.

I think OP is trying to state that BA is a "very valuable" stat as I am the friend he got in the argument with IRL. I was trying to tell him, using GMJ, Juan Pierre and Adam Dunn as examples, that batting average is not a very valuable stat. I tried to explain that OBP and EQA are inherently more valuable and BA really should not be used as one of the primary stats to evaluate a player. (I did, however, concede that a high batting average can be indicative of a good player, but it is very deceptive and can easily mislead someone to think that GMJ or Juan Pierre are good.) |
