If you want hard Sci-Fi, it doesn't get any better than Stephen Baxter... especially the "Manifold" series.

Neuromancer is good. It is a seminal work in the cyberpunk field. I think the whole Sprawl trilogy is pretty good, too.
I am biased because I like cyberpunk genre stuff. |

The Demon Prince series by Jack Vance.
If you are not familiar with Jack Vance, you owe it to yourself to check his work out. I would describe most of his writing as planetary fantasy or science fantasy. It's brilliant. |
