I'm really curious who is a better sportswriter, besides the obvious Baseball Prospectus guys and their type. Simmons has been going downhill lately, but at his peak, at least he was consistently funny despite being overly reliant on sports cliches (clutch, intangibles, etc), as opposed to every single other sportswriter in existence who has the same flaws but doesn't have anything interesting to say whatsoever. Say what you want about his knowledge of the NBA, the atrocious GM summit is pretty funny.

Dr. Z. Jacob Luft doesn't embarass himself. Jack McCallum is good, if a little pretentious. John Heyman is awesome just due to his information.

Maybe I phrased it wrong, obviously there are better guys out there. But, as to being one of the worst writers in the world, surely 99% of sportswriters out there are much worse. For everyone you think is better, there are 50 Plaschkes, Woody Paiges, etc writing just absolute crap.

ok nearly every sports writer / commentator that i like i'm finding out that his reputation isn't the best among other. who are the most widely respected sports writers please?

weird, I hate the Patriots with such a passion, and even I love Bill Simmons. I can't think of any reason someone would think he's an objectively bad writer

I think Simmons is great. I read almost all his columns/blogs/whatever and am consistantly entertained by him.
