Bitcho,

Haha nice, I live right by the Phoenician. Decent range, horrendous course (although salvaged somewhat by the fact that it's managed by Troon Golf, but still...).

Guys, I don't think the cart guys give a crap, particularly if it's not a private facility and even moreso if it's a municipal or lower-end track. Just show up like you're gonna play, and just warm up on the putting/chipping greens and/or the driving range. When you're done, leave. It's not like the whole place is watching you.

Tuq,

I think that's the second time I've seen that you've golfed in the Iowa City area (you were talking about Brown Deer once, I think). If you're ever in the area and looking for a playing partner, PM me.

You got it mang. There's an outside chance I'll be back in September, but we'll see. Two weeks ago I was back for a funeral in Davenport - but managed to stay for the John Deere, a wedding and a round of golf (Crow Valley in Bettendorf). You may have no idea, but the greens at the worst course in Iowa are better than the best course in Phoenix. It's just such a great climate to grow bent grass and other great grasses in.

I've also been out to Pleasant Valley. Pretty good public course IMO, but it's been a few years.

Related story,

There is this course called The Phoenician (sp?) down right near there. It's not private, but it's very upscale. $145 iirc a couple years ago to play peak season. $10 for a hotdog. They have a range that you drive your cart down to which is quite a distance from the proshop. The balls are already stacked, ready to hit.
I would just show up and head to the pro shop for a minute to look like I'm checking in for the sake of the cart guys outside. (they've already loaded my clubs on a cart at this point). I come back outside, tell them my friend is late from a meeting and I'm heading to the range to kill some time.
The turf was nice, endless balls, lots of fresh water, etc..

God damn I miss the Phoenix area the more I talk about this

Yeah, I just hit Pleasant Valley last week for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised. I've avoided it because its pricing suggested to me it was a crappy course, when I could do better at Finkbine for equivalent money. I'll definitely be going back, but only on a breezier day, as the crazy amount of standing water on the course led to tons of mosquitos.

I've really only golfed in Iowa, Indiana, and Florida, and have never noticed grasses that were much better or worse than what I'm used to. It doesn't surprise me we grow good bent grass here -- Iowa tends to be good at growing stuff.

You know that Riverside (the new casino 15 mi. south of Iowa City) is opening a 36 holer, don't you? Pretty pricey, but I took a walk around there the other day wile playing cards, and the thing looks like it will be cherry.

Maybe I'll catch you in September.
