Noob question and potential hijack:

If he is investing in an vangaurd index fund, isn't the best play to just go str8 to the Vangaurd website==>minimize fees?

There are no fees using Firstrade to pick up mutual funds, meaning he can diversify funds as needed.

It depends on your intent... you will generally have more flexibility in a regular brokerage account, than you will opening an account at a mutual fund site.

If your long term intent is solely to drop some funds into a family of funds, then there might be some benefit to just going with them.
