It's likely a composite of many broke poker players or just a person that stereotypes broke poker players.

This is not news for anybody who was around poker rooms pre poker boom. I was friends with high stakes players and they were always broke and looking for handouts. These are guys that called themselves pros and are probably the same guys who became poker celebrities if they got lucky in a tournament.
