I think my first mistake here was not reraising preflop. The fact villain hasn't yet raised a hand is not significant due to small sample size but at least I define my hand. 3 betting preflop is something I'm reluctant to do preflop with unpaired hands at these stakes - maybe a leak?

The min check/raise screams a lot of strength to me. Villain must know I've likely hit the ace but doesn't care. On turn I need to decide whether to play this for all my chips because I don't think calling is an option after this strong bet. He has just $2 left after this bet

I probably would have played it the same way, and I probably would have also been pretty unhappy about laying it down.

Calling preflop with AQs there vs a relative unknown is fine I think.

IMHO.

Playing AQs preflop against a raise is either a fold (vs a nit or OOP [except blind steals]) or a 3-bet (pretty much any other time).

Otherwise you're apt to get yourself in trouble. AQ is not a hand I want to go to war with on an A high flop after a PFR because villain is going to have AK a lot. By 3-betting we gain a ton of information. Most villains will fold AJ/AT (or worse) to a 3-bet. So if we see a flop and there's an ace, and villain still wants to get frisky we can be pretty sure our TP is no good.

OTOH, if we just call and villain wants to throw down on an ace-high flop, we have no idea if we're up against AJ or AK and things can get messy, fast.

There are some special cases where I could see just calling a raise with AQ (implied odds versus a whole bunch of calling stations who want call pf 3-bets) but generally I think it's raise or fold.
