as played, you have to call. any monsters would have been raising that 2suited turn. the only real concern is T8. which is a real concern, but you still beat too much, and it's too likely he's making a move. especially given his history, and how small you were betting.

i like a flop 3bet:
,esp against this villain because he's likely raising this flop with a very wide range to that donkbet and may put you in a very difficult situation on a blank turn. also, he may well feel like getting it in with a combo draw (which to him might include FD+2 overs).

56, 97, smaller diamonds, all could have raised that flop. even some weird Ax hands that were just trying to steal the pot. OP says he's been quite active.

Why not check-call the river? It seems weak but I think it's best.

After he raises the flop I would suspect he's either drawing or has 97 (and possibly a set). Sometimes he has air or a gutshot.

However, once he calls your turn lead you can eliminate air and gutshots. I'm pretty sure he's raising sets on this turn so I would eliminate those.

So, on the river he has 97, busted flush draws, busted straight draws, and T8.

If we check, I believe 97 will bet nearly 100% of the time. T8 will also bet. Plus, maybe he bluffs at some of his busted draws.

If we bet he will call with 97, so we don't gain any value most of the time from this hand by betting since he will bet it if we check. Also, if we bet he will fold busted draws and hands like 86. But, he will raise T8.

So, I think check-calling is the correct play on this river, even though it feels weak.

EDIT: I should also add A9/A7 to his range that could raise the flop then call a turn lead. Against this hand a check-call is certainly optimal.

I like the way you played it. I usually bet bigger on flop but thats minor.

River I would call, hoping he value bets some weaker 2pr hand. Other than that there are only bluffs you beat, but with 2 draws that missed I think you can call.

Folding river is ok too, maybe even better.

What worse hands call his river bet?

Of those worse hands, how many are checking behind on the river if we check?

I'm not sure how we 'waste' any value by checking.......
