I think I hated Celine and Julie Go Boating worse than anything I can recall seeing. And there was so much of it!

I forget who said it, but the line goes something like this: "Nobody ever wished Paradise Lost were any longer."

I love Celine and Julie; it's Amelie for grownups, boys. But I can see why people would hate it.

Have you seen Shadows of My Forgotten Ancestors? That's one I just didn't get; of course, I was a mere tyke at the time. Maybe I'd like it more now.

DB,

I sat through almost every movie on the list, including The Gospel, but I would have nominated Salo although I don't think I will ever watch it again.

A lot of these seem like quick studies, like easy picks, the kind a critic would get into in a relatively short, reasonable amount of time; but, there is a smattering of the harder stuff to sit through -- films like Rublev. I think I kind of like this, but I also get the feeling that the median age of nominators must be pretty close to my own nonetheless. What an odd feeling -- it's disquieting.

cincy,

knowing what i do about the people on the panel, i'd say the median age is low 30's, minimum. i wouldn't be shocked if it were near 40.

of the people i know, i'm one of the younger ones

That sounds about right. I haven't seen about a third of these, but that's not saying anything much.

there's an interesting point being brought up elsewhere.

how much of this is influenced by Criterion and the availability of films on DVD? I know I don't really have a chance to see stuff unless it's on DVD

this seemed very Criterion-informed to me, and not the first suggestion i've happened upon that Criterion may be defining a more tangible generation than i had thought possible. but before i become some sort of augurer...
