On a related note, I remember a while back that Oberlin's baseball team experimented with a 2-5 defense because they were giving up so many fly balls. After they started using the formation, they started hemmorraghing stolen bases instead.

I've thought about this too. Seems you could set some good records for putouts by putting your normal 1B at any other position but still have him play the same place.

i always wondered what would happen if you have two OF with pitcher's arm. can you alternate them on a per inning basis? basically, bringing a reliever without taking the pitcher out of the game.

is this legal?

No, definitely not. The one throwing the ball off the mound must be listed as the pitcher, and once you take him off the mound once, he can't go back in.

he can't go back onto the mound, or back into the game?

Can't you keep switching and OF and a pitcher back and forth. I thought so, but now I'm not so sure.

Back on the mound I'm almost positive. At least in high school, we would switch a pitcher and position player all the time, but a player would never pitch two different times in the same game.

I'm about 80% sure that you can move off the mound and come back to pitch as long as you aren't removed from the game.

That situation never happened, but you're probably right.

I'm 100% sure you can move a pitcher to another position and then bring him back to the mound. I'm 99% sure that Microbob will be along shortly to link us all to a box score of a Mets game that it happened in.
