Default Bubble Time: Pushing with A-X

Hi all,

As some of you guys know, pushing with A-X near bubble time in an SNG can be a tricky play. Especially when ‘X’ is a small number like 3 or 5, it is easily dominated by a medium pocket pair (eg: 7-7).

So question, how often do you guys push with A-X? Do you set a threshold, eg: X>9 or does it depend on stack size, read on opponents?

Generally, I like to push X greater or equal to 9 so it will be a coin-flip against lower pocket pairs. What do you think?

I need X = A here, otherwise it's into the muck.

The formula is pretty complicated professor.

The Ax Formula EV calculation...
+EV = -log(X) * 5e(-3)
Where X = Your kicker. Plug 2 into the formula and you have your answer. Just remember always have a calculator handy.

Hi Professor, Suggest you need to look at an ICM calculator (SNGPT etc) for your answer here. There are many situations where any 2 is a +ev bubble push, having an Ace is a bonus for when you are called.

Sure a small kicker increases your chance of domination but at the bubble you are relying on fold equity, the times you are called then the difference is relatively small (45/55 vs 70/30 or 75/25), to make up for this you will sometimes be called with KQ, QJ etc.

A single ace is a fine hand in many bubble suitations, you need to work out which ones based on stack sizes / blinds / position and the calling ranges of your opponents....
