call the turn, raise the river. You are head here a ton of the time and I do not expect to see a 5 here at all.

You want MP there on the river for an overcall, where raising the turn, MP or SB may check/fold the river. If SB is heavily straightforward then u might consider overcalling the river.

Overlay = Overcall = Calling after someone else has called.

Is it standard to call a pre-flop raise with 44 on the button?

with all those other people in, it's worth it. we're about 8:1 to hit a set and there are 6 other people in in a raised pot, so if we hit we're likely to get paid off nicely. if i were utg+2 and utg raised, i would fold, because you don't know how many more are coming in behind you. here, hero has position on the button which is important.

BBB hit it on the nose. Its not something that comes up that often in online play, but is frequent live. I had position with 4 people already in the hand I didn't except a Limp reraise from UTG 1 or 2. Although I was still fairly new at the table. LRR is just not that common of a play. Also, the beautiful part about 44 is its fairly easy to release post flop when missed, but will usually pay off nicely when it hits. Also if the board paired on the river, It would have probably resulted in the me and the sb capping.

The overlay is dead money going into the pot that increases your expectation, possibly even turning a -EV call into a +EV call.

Let's say you have a game where you and your opponent each put in $1 and you win 40% of the time.

Each round you get $2 * .4 = $.80, so your expection is -$.20 per round. Not good.

But say a third person comes along and wants to play, and he's kinda an idiot and plays despite having 0% chance of winning.

Now, each round you get $3 * .4 = $1.20, a positive expectation of $.20. It's the same game, but the presence of the third person padding the pot makes it profitable.

To go one step further, let's say you win 60% of the time.
With 3 people, your win is $3 * .6 = $1.80, so your expectation is $.80.

Now you are given the option of doubling the stakes to $2, but if you do the third person will refuse to play. So you have $4 * .6 = $2.40, and your expectation is $.40. Even though you have the edge, it's still better to play for the smaller stakes as long as the third person is around.
