Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
You see, what I did is called a "level." Throughout this thread we are presented with three different "Mr. Pink" gimmick accounts, each with a different variation on the spelling of "Mr. Pink."
In an attempt to be humorous I presented another "Mr. Pink" gimmick account with an especially retarded spelling of "Mr. Pink." Please accept my apologies for failing in my endeavor to be humorous. |

td,
"but if regulars and friends wanted to get free drinks the next time, i expected to get tipped approximately the value of what i gave them." Why not just steal straight from the till then? |

Eh, I liked the original gag, but I hate gimmicks who break character, so I'm conflicted.

[ QUOTE ] See, this is what I would say the majority of people do, but it seems unbalanced to me. My friend ends up making $25, and I save $8. In terms of relative difference, the friend would have normally made $8 (so he's +$17), and getting a WAY better deal than I am. [/ QUOTE ] your friend is assuming the risk of getting fired by giving away drinks to you. you are assuming the risk of consuming too many free drinks. i think you're getting the better end of the deal here. [/ QUOTE ] I've never worked in a bar, but is it really assuming much of a risk? I see free drinks given out all the time and have never heard of a bartender getting fired because of it. I just figured it was standard practice to allow it to go on, as long as it was minor. A free drink to a patron every once in a while can cause that patron to become a regular. I see it as a win for the bar so I just figured most owners see it that way also. I know if I owned a bar, I wouldn't mind if it went on, just as long as it was within limits and I'd probably ask the bartender to keep a tally of free drinks so the bottom line isn't all jacked up at the end of the month. |

[/ QUOTE ] eld, i'm not saying i'm not appreciative of smaller tips, but there is a lot of pressure on bar staff to hook up the right people. your freeloading friends and douchebags who think they deserve free stuff just because they've been around forever are not the right people. hooking up big tippers makes sense not only for the bartenders but also the managers and owners, because bartenders are whores and will leave for busier, hotter bars first chance they get. if you tip like 50% of the value of what i give you, you're still going to get free drinks, but i'm not letting your entire tab slide like i would if you're tipping 100%. |

[/ QUOTE ] So if people tip what would have been the entire bill, you let the tab slide? How generous. I'd rather have you let me pay 33% and pay 50% of it myself so at least I save something for being hooked up. |

td,
"hooking up big tippers makes sense not only for the bartenders but also the managers and owners" You weren't hooking people up. You were straight up stealing, period. That does not make sense for the owners. |

Re: Two tipping scenarios that have been bugging me
I'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks of this as stealing.
btw, it is acceptable to comp regular customers at some places, but hooking up your friends is stealing. bartenders get fired for this all the time (they also do it all the time) |
