Wow dude, technically they are the same ---> see Webster's or any Poker Glossary, BUT it is common (sort of like slang) to refer to a set as 3 of a kind made with a pocket pair and trips being made with a pair on the board.

Seriously ill leave quietly but when they say that it's just so hard not to ring their necks! Except for women obviously. . . . them just talking makes me wana ring their necks lol. It is held by some but there are poker theorists who use the terms interchangably and others yet who hold to the distinction but fail to use the correct terminology rigorously.
