Dark Tower Series by Steven King might be the best book series I've ever read.

Book 1 would be the worst of the series and a turn off to some but mark my words this is the best book series of all time.

Seriously? I stopped after book no 1. Might want to carry on after all?

I agree this series was probably my favorite ever. I could not put down books 5-7. Definitely worth carrying on. Book 1 (Gunslinger) was just a teaser.

AceLuby's mention of deep politics reminded me of another good one, the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. At least one of these won a Hugo for best novel.

If and when Mars is colonized, I can see it panning out just as it does in these books.

My enjoyment was dimmed a bit by Robinson's Berkeleyite politics; but only a bit.

Book 1 was the worst of the Dark Tower series? No way. Book 6 is basically useless and Book 7 is a letdown. Not to mention the series took a sharp turn for the worse towards the end of Book 5.

However, I loved the first four books (and 5 was very good as well). I definitely recommend it but like most series it gets worse, not better, towards the end. I can't say much more without spoiling anything.

I found the first three pretty good/horrible/fun. I mean it's just trashy, kinda lazy writing, but it moves the pages.

Couple other genres, Scarlet by Stephan Lawhead just came out, sequel to Hood. Retelling of the Robin Hood story in a different manner.

Oh, another one. Mary Stewart's retelling of the King Arthur story is phenomenal.

Another recommendation for the Farseer Trilogy.

The title and cover art implied to me a light, D&D-esque story, but it's so much more. Fitz is one of the most sympathetic main characters I've read. This series also introduces The Fool, who gets his own series (the Tawny Man trilogy) later and is one of the most enigmatic main characters I've encountered. I wish I'd been paying more attention to The Fool the first time around.

After The Farseer trilogy I was ready to read anything written by Hobb. The Liveship Traders is written in the same world as Farseer, and features the same Hobb gift for writing engaging characters.

I also second evil twin's vote for Tigana. Incredibly moving and frustrating descriptions of the loss suffered by the people of Tigana--not at losing their homeland, but their very identity.

The Lions of Al-Rassan, also by Guy Gavriel Kay, is excellent as well. Kay writes pseudo historical fiction with light touches of fantasy. Lions is drawn from the Spanish Reconquista, when the Christians retook Spain from the Moors. The climax is epic and heartbreaking.

IMO, don't bother finishing Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. You can tell the guy knows his science, and I want him on my team if I ever enter a contest to terraform Mars, but I don't want to read about every step of the process ad nauseum.

Going to check out Gene Wolf and Steven Erikson

Ha, this is actually the one I'm reading right now, on advice from a friend. I find it to be a good read, but for me it's been too centrally focused on Merlin, which really rules out the fun of multiple intertwining plots.
