You understand that the average TV show only has 22-24 epps per season right?

It shouldn't be a shock that there's re-runs.

If that was at me, yeah, but I'm impatient and I have a short attention span. I enjoyed speeding through the first season of the show on DVD and it just seems easier that way.

Why not either a)make more shows or b)run it for 24 weeks with no reruns.

CEO of ABC, here I come...

I think you're seeing people moving in that way. Look at how 24 works. It's just going to take people a long time to break this habit.

I love what FX does, where they just run a full season (allbeit not 22 epps) of a show in one time slot, and then replace that show with another show that caters to the same demo. Solid idea.

Next week will be new. They are saving up, prob might have a rerun 2 weeks from now, and then saving up for the final 4-5 episodes for the may final run.

Yes it should be. Running new episodes for the whole season > the crap they do now. Look at 24.

If they HAVE to show new episodes and they HAVE to show reruns, why not show the reruns AT THE END OF THE SEASON???

It's not like anybody watches them anyway. Same deal with Smallville, House, etc...

You guys fail to understand the nature of TV business. Networks generate revenues through advertising. Advertising pays the networks certain figures based on viewership, and it surveys the number of viewers at certain periods during the calendar year -- namely November, May, February, and August.

Networks can only afford to produce a certain number of episodes per season, often 22-24 for full seasons, 10-13 for half seasons. Those new episodes will air during the "sweeps" months listed above. Therefore it makes no sense to show all the new episodes in a row, for then there will be sweeps months with re-runs only, hence low viewership, hence low ad revenue.

Of course. But it does seem like Lost takes this to an extreme. I don't have any actual data to show that other series don't progress in this same way. Perhaps it's because of the serial nature of it, or that we clearly anticipate each new episode more than any other show's new episodes. I do know that it's frustrating.

I know more than a couple of people who have basically given up watching it because they can't handle waiting so long between episodes or they can't follow the plots after such breaks. Maybe they're full of [censored] and watching anyway. If not, I suspect that a good share of these folks will rent/buy the DVDs when they are released, so money will still be made.
