Pulling it Out before it Hits Bottom
I'm watching the US Open on ESPN and a few minutes ago I saw something that struck me funny. The golfer hit a short putt kind of hard and it slipped in the side of the hole. You could see the ball flash around the top part of the inside of the cup. Assuming he was making the putt, the golfer was moving to grab it out of the hole even before the ball reached the hole. It looked like he might have even grabbed it so fast he didn't give the ball a chance to reach the bottom of the cup. Like he grabbed it out of the inside of the top of the cup while it was still rolling around there.
Maybe he didn't really in this case, but theoretically I think it could be done. Does the ball have to settle at the bottom of the Hole before it is considered In the hole? If a golfer grabs it out of the top part of the inside of the hole before it reaches the bottom of the hole, should he call a penalty on himself? PairTheBoard |

Re: Pulling it Out before it Hits Bottom
PTB,
No clue, in the thousands of putts I've holed on the course I've never seen or heard of it coming all the way back out. I see it once in a great while on the putting green, but those cups are often very shallow. Suffice it to say, unless it was really heinous there's no chance he'll be penalized for what he did. |

Holed
A ball is 'holed' when it is at rest within the circumference of the hole and all of it is below the level of the lip of the hole. From what you described all of the ball was likely below the circumference of the lip. If not you would think there would be a noticeable problem at the time. |

Re: Pulling it Out before it Hits Bottom
I don't have a rule book handy, but from my ezperience I think the player is technically suppose to let the ball completely come to rest in the hole before they can pick it up.

Re: Pulling it Out before it Hits Bottom
The rule book says that the ball must be at rest at the bottom of the hole. But there is a decision saying that if you reach down into the hole and pick up the ball before it has stopped moving, it is still holed.
You are not allowed to catch the ball while it is going down the hole though (ie. holding your hand in the hole and then putting and catching the ball). If you putt then put your hand into the hole after the ball has gone into the hole, but it is not yet at rest, it isn't likely that the ball somehow would jump out of the hole. |

Re: Pulling it Out before it Hits Bottom
even though you say this is theoretical, there is no way in hell what you described actually happened.

Re: Pulling it Out before it Hits Bottom
It also happened to joe daley in Q school. he tapped a 2 footer in the center of the cup and it popped back out to rest on the lip. he missed making the tour by 1 shot.
