AceLuby,

I lost my father when I was 18 years old - sorry for your loss, I know how it feels.

Please forgive me for thinking of the business end of this, but I know that if you can solve the insurance thing, it will allow you to grieve, unmingled by financial worry.

Basically, it shouldn't be too hard to find out if he, in fact, did have an insurance policy. As long as your father paid his premiums, there should be some sort of paper trail in the form of cancelled checks, old bankbooks, etc.

Depending on how old your father was, the policy may have been 'paid in full' some years ago, so make sure you check out at least the last 10 to 15 years.

Of course, even if you discover that there was a policy, you have no way of knowing if this was a term life policy, or the limits, etc. However, I believe there are laws that force insurance companies to hold records, so you may have to get a lawyer at that point.

Just a thought.

Be good,

Augie

Sorry for your loss... I wouldn't even be able to fathom the grief I would be going through in your situation.

I appreciate the thoughts and the suggestions. His employer is currently looking into what policies he had so hope is not lost. Regarding assets, the only thing he really owned was his truck, but with the help of some lawyer friends hopefully we can clear this up without too much monitary loss. Thanks again for everything.

There's really nothing anyone can say. My father passed away a little over a year ago. I talked to people who had lost a parent recently and those conversations were always surreal because there's no such thing as common experience in this. Pain doesn't transfer.

Be strong.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

From what I've found, Insurance companies are fairly legit, and wouldn't ever deny the existence of our fathers policy. I'm sure you'll find the paper trail as someone suggested, but the insurance companies only need your fathers SS# in order to reference the account. You could call 'just looking for general information', and they shouldn't give you any trouble. If it was Group Life, then there will certainly be some payroll records.

Sorry and good luck settling this.

Lost my father (Im 20 yo) 2 weeks ago also on cancer.
He was diagnosed 2 months earlier. So I can relate and want to give my sympathy(sorry, dont know a good english word)

Its a good thing to post it here, it helped me because I did the same thing at an other forum.

I can only hope that you get the money you deserve because you shouldnt give up on that. Maybe you'll find a paper with his case. It doesnt help, but he would have wanted you to have that money

If I could give you one advice, it would be that you should remember the good times you did have (since he was dianosed), in stead of the the things you still wanted to do with him.
