[ QUOTE ]

1. Ridiculously long regular season that serves no purpose other than to eliminate the teams that really suck. Okay, the NBA does this too, but it is still dumb.

[/ QUOTE ]

This used to be the case - no longer. Getting into the playoffs is a big accomplishment, and there's very few bad teams who slip in there.

[ QUOTE ]
2. "I went to see a fight and a hockey game broke out." If I want to see a fist fight, I'll put on a boxing match or ultimate figting match. If you punch another player, you should get a fine and suspension, with escalating penalties for repeat offenders. This is how it works in every professional sports league but the NHL. In the NHL, you have to cause life-threatening injuries to get suspended. It may be a tradition in the NHL to "drop the gloves" but it is still dumb.

[/ QUOTE ]

If fighting were dropped, a lot of the NHL's fans would too. I've heard this argument from non-hockey fans, and quite simply it is a part of the game, and if it went away, so would a fair amount of the fan base who's fed up with the way the NHL is run these days. Hockey is a physical game, and allowing players who skate around with large sticks and rock-hard elbow pads to release their frustration through fighting rather than more unsavory means might make the game safer overall.

More than half of the teams make the playoffs. It isn't that big of an accomplishment to be in the top 53% after 82 games.

OP-
Teams do this at the end of the season, when the point crunch hits. If 2 teams are tied with <10 minutes left in regulation, they often slow down their attack and wait for OT to settle the game. Just one reason I hate the new OT/Shootout rules.

The Wild seem to do this with <10 minutes left in the 2nd period.

[ QUOTE ]

2) If a player on Boston's team taunts a player on the opponent's team - they can fight. And the benches don't clear. They usually stay out of the way and applaud the effort of their teammates.

[/ QUOTE ]

The reason the benches are allowed to clear in baseball is because baseball is the only sport where 9 players from one team are on the field while 1 player from the other team is. They do this to protect the individual from a 9 on 1 beating.

The current system has been around for like 3 or 4 seasons now. So far it doesn't seem to be being severely abused, but it still is likely to change at some point, most likely to the 3 for a Win, 2 for a OT/SO Win, 1 for a OT/SO Loss, and 0 for Regulation loss format.

Hockey is a super high variance sport. Throw in the trade deadline which is more active than in any other sport (and almost certainly has a greater impact than in, say, baseball) - and almost any team which makes the final 8 can end up representing the conference. This is what makes the hockey playoffs superior to any other.

They ought to just skip the regular season and go straight to the playoffs.
