Thayer and Thremp and other condescending "omg I know teh sabermetric statz" guys are so totally wrong in this argument it's insane. You can argue maybe the Yanks have the best pitching going FORWARD, but there are zero metrics asserting anything at all that they have the best pitching right now. Their various in-season improvements haven't shown the results yet at all, so wtf are you talking about?

ARI: 9th in Defensive Efficiency at .702. NYY: 15th at .697. NOT A BIG DIFFERENCE. That's the best you have? Jesus.

Pads and Red Sox and various other teams I'm too lazy to look at have better pitching than the Yanks. The Yanks' pitching is good, not great, until proved otherwise. Get over it.

[/ QUOTE ]

Best going forward and best now are the exact same thing. Unless "going forward" you want to say has some absurd 2-5 year period.

And WTF is this proved otherwise silliness...

So if Joba goes out and gets shellshocked next time... He isn't good?

Except you can't say the Yanks have the best pitching right now when you have almost zero evidence supporting that claim. Therefore your argument is solely based on future faith, hence my post.

DC,

You're using past indicators of success which aren't predictive at all. ERA+ tells you how well pitching has been, not how good its going to be. These things are important since some stats are better to predict the future with than others. You are missing this inherent fact.

Here's some basic evidence here.

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/stats/...lastName=Hughes
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/stats/...p;lastName=Webb
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/statpages/glossary/

I'm sure you can use projection or conversions to run Joba/Edwar v Scott/Kyle.

You, like many people, are being results oriented in your thinking. Rick Ankiel isn't good because he three jacks. He still has a terrible OBP but can knock the ball. But here you are using this type of argument to rip on pitching.

More Dbacks running hot:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstats/ma...tName=Hernandez
http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstats/ma...;lastName=Davis
http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstats/ma...mp;lastName=Kim
http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstat...astName=Owings

Note: Owings in the last one to be close. And even then he's still on the positive side of variance.

What happened to the Yanks? Where did the pitching go?

[/ QUOTE ]

that anyone thinks the yankees have had any pitching for the last 6 years just makes me laugh

[/ QUOTE ]

Yankees currently have the best pitching in baseball.

[/ QUOTE ]

Do you mean at this moment? Because their ERA+ of 99 for the year is below average...

[/ QUOTE ]

Hughes Wang Clemens Pettite Mussina.

Edwar Vizcaino Chamberlain Rivera.

Beat that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Halladay Marcum Mcgowan Burnett Litsch
Janssen Downs Accardo= best in baseball

If only we could hit

Also, Dodgers have some pretty sick pitching, but also can't hit

Predictive stats. Same reason why Peyton is better than Vince Young?
