I am not really sure I understand, are they definitely getting divorced, or is he just talking about it? If you are sure she intends to divorce then he needs to plan, but if he is the one intiating, then he could get counseling first. Sometimes, joint conseling in these cases can actually help a partner that has kind of decided that they are getting anything out of the relationship, but is stuck in it to either leave, or get the other person to commit to changing. I don't see how some type of help is a bad idea for your father, he seems unhappy but unable to take action to change it.
