We do not want the same family running the country for 16 years, MrWookie! What's next, Jeb Bush? For the love of god let's get some fresh blood in that White House. Give me a Biden, a Kucinich, a Ron Paul...anyone, anyone at all. Hell I'll go for a guy named Mitt. I'll even take that Bloomberg dude. Just not a Clinton or Bush. Ok maybe ol Bill Clinton again, maybe.
(settle down, Chip. You're so fun to rile )

O rly?

That's what I was thinking heheh. By now, America has seemed to adapt pretty fully to the idea of an imperial presidency and political oligarchies. As the American voter becomes less and less relevant to how the country really runs, money and pedigree working together have fashioned politicians into a class unto themselves that pisses down on the rest of us from a considerable height. And we seem pretty much fine with that, and even seem to dig it a little.

Rudy's pro-choice stance is what hurts him with the religious right.

Other than that, I have no idea why CDS gives him no chance. He will play the 9/11 card all the way, it is a good card.

[/ QUOTE ]

Even if the religious right doesn't like Rudy (or finds Mitt's Mormonism unacceptable) they would hold their nose and chose Rudy or Mitt over Obama, Hillary or any other Democrat (except perhaps Joe Biden). This means Rudy or Mitt wins most of the red states (especially those in the center of the country) anyway. Turnout will be low but it won't matter with the electoral college.

Meanwhile, Rudy or Mitt puts many blue states in play for the Republicans. Neither candidate is closely associated with Bush so he won't hurt them (and the best thing Bush can do for the Republican candidate is to stay uninvolved ).

Right now I put the Republicans as about a 3 to 2 favorite to win the oval office in 2008.

No matter who the cand is the Dems are def not dogs they are favorites.
They are going to have a sizeable $$ advantage, they are in a change election, the are with the majority of the US in terms of the major issue-Iraq, many of the battleground states are trending towards Dems due to the hispanic revolt against the republican party and a majority of indep and moderate rep no longer identify themselves as repub.

Rudy has the best shot in a general but again..he will lose a ton of conservative republican votes...the notion that evangs will still mobilize over a guy who is pro abortion/pro gays/pro everything they hate is kind of silly

I think you underestimate the power of single-issue religious voters. They may not vote for Rudy, but that's a far cry from saying they'll vote for a democrat.

You don't have to approve of how the Iraq war is going to vote for people who want to continue it either. Americans have a strong tendency to rally for whoever is in office when America is at war. "America, Right or Wrong" is a sentiment with very real value to a lot of people. A good deal of people even believe it is un-American to speak out for your beliefs(!!!) when we are at war.

Additionally, there isn't really a plan that the democrats can put out there that can make withdrawal from Iraq look like anything smooth or without disastrous results in Iraq. (Though the option of continuing is disastrous too.)

So I really don't think the Dems are leaping ahead because of Iraq. Maybe ahead of where they were, but where they were was basically -- gone. Out of the picture. Irrelevant. Now, they merely come back into visibility on the radar. But that hardly makes them any more popular.

you seem to confuse mobilize hundreds of thousands of voters with someone who was going to vote no matter what finally settling and voting for rudy cuz he is their only option given he is the only repub.

Many many evang will NOT VOTE at all and esp for Rudy no matter what out of principle. Doesn't matter who the Dem cand is. They simply will not vote for a man who supports and helps the cause of the murder of innocent lives along with the promotion of a lifestyle that is an abomination.

This is why if Fred Thompson doesn't implode/fall apart..which is highly unlikely...either he or romney will be the rep can in 08

The two main blocks that reliably vote: old people and people who are highly religious/one-issue voters.

[/ QUOTE ]

Old people actually vote Democratic in higher numbers because of Social Security and Medicare

You are also disregarding the possibility that Rudy might 'have an epiphany' and change his position in order to cater to this vote.

And frankly, if you think the religious right will stay home and let Hillary Clinton be elected President, you need to get out of L.A. more.

Recent studies have shown that the swing in people who identify themselves or lean Democratic is due to people who formerly were for smaller government now starting to favor more government help in terms of social programs...medicare/ss/etc
