First of all, Wash U is not the Harvard of the Midwest. It's Northeast Missouri State, now Truman State. Named to the top 10 low-priced liberal arts univerisities in the midwest SEVERAL years in a row by USA Today. Put that in your hat and smoke it.

Truman tried to pay me to attend and I still wouldn't. Living in Kirksville would be beyond awful, and when you get out all you've got is a degree from Truman State.

I used to think a great deal of "name" schools until I started meeting people who attend aforementioned institutions.

FWIW, I went to Harvard. I think many liberal arts schools offer the same quality of undergraduate education as Harvard.

Other schools have professors of the same quality, but half of what I remember from Harvard is stuff I learned from my classmates, especially my rooming group. YMMV.

While this is of course true, the implication that this could only happen at Harvard is pretty silly. If you're serious enough about looking you can find smart people almost anywhere. And even at good schools there are plenty of borderline anti-intellectuals who are there just because they can be. Based solely on the comparative merits of the education you receive, I think going to really prestigious undergraduate institutions is probably overrated in a lot of ways. This is probably even more so in the case of institutions where a great deal of the reputation is built on excellence at research, which seems to be most places that aren't small liberal arts colleges.
