Lucinda Williams
Bonnie Raitt

I love both but just recently discovered Lucinda Williams and only have "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road". Any recommendations for a good second choice CD for my Christmas list?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, Lucinda is not, in a word, prolific.

I say get the older one, "Lucinda Williams." It has "Passionate Kisses" on it, among other LW classics.

Some country music singers:

Iris DeMent
Emmylou Harris

And in the same vein as Janis Joplin - - not a classically beautiful voice, but women who sing their guts out:

Mary Gauthier
Lucinda Williams

Since I like Emmylou and Lucinda so much I defenitly need to check out these other two. Best Emmylou album is Wrecking Ball IMHO.

Wrecking Ball is amazing. It is Emmylou Harris' best work.

Get the CD Mercy Now by Mary Gauthier.

As for Iris DeMent, get anything. She can be over the top preachy/political, but her voice is miraculous.

Wiki sez:

The original version of the song features vocals by Elizabeth Fraser (of the Cocteau Twins).

Just listened to Mezzanine for the first time in a long time and Teardrop definitely stood out to me. I completely agree that she has an amazing voice. Here's Elizabeth Fraser's Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Fraser

Edit: someone already beat me to it...
