48 Laws of Power was kind of interesting, but it's only what you make of it.
I just finished Mercy among the Children, by David Adams Richards (canadian author). Not sure how well known this is, but won some awards, and I think it's very powerful.

Another book I read fairly recently that was the most interesting thing I've read in a while was Stumbling On Happiness by Daniel Gilbert.

It basically talks about what makes actually makes us happy, what we think will make us happy, and how we live our lives based on that. Very well written, and I notice things Gilbert talks about all the time in day to day life.

This was a very interesting book-- you don't really need to buy the book though. If you just google the dude you can see all of his thoughts on the web in about ten minutes.

Nolanfan,
If you enjoyed the Kite Runner you should read The Power of One. It has a similar theme to the story and is about boxing.

The Godfather, amazing book! I'm only half way through but hell, it's good.
The professor the banker and the suicide king, this was a good one too. I enjoyed it.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think Godfather the book is even better than Godfather the movie, and the movie is one of my favorite movies.

If for some reason you haven't already read it, A Game Of Thrones, by George R.R. Martin, along with the entire series of Song of Fire and Ice is a fantastic read.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you can get past the fact that George R.R. Martin cannot write to save his life, these books are great. The story itself is fantastic, the writing just blows. The most recent book in the series sucked in every way, though.

can anyone recommend good mystery or adventure novels? i'm sort of working on a screenplay that's a blend of both genres but it's very difficult to get the tone just right and i could always use some new inspiration/good reads.

if you havent read the intelligent investor and art of war you should. if you have read them you should probably read them again. i read the singularity is near 6 mo. ago decided it made sense and put my money where my mind was and invested heavily in e-commerce co.s (goog, ebay, amzn, and yhoo) so far so good....very good.

[/ QUOTE ]

You should tell him which translation of the art of war you have read because there are some that are terrible and some that are good.
