[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I guess people are just more specialized . . . than they once were. [/ QUOTE ] This is a good thing. A very, very, very good thing. [/ QUOTE ] But it doesn't feel good [/ QUOTE ] because it shouldn't. it means you have less knowledge about the things around you. [/ QUOTE ] This is also a very, very, very good thing. Do you see why? The last time everyone knw everything there was to know about all of the technologies that were utilized in their lives was probably the stone age. It is an extremely good thing that the fraction of known technological information that the typical person can master is going down rapidly. [/ QUOTE ] Boro, You keep saying this like it's true. I can't just will myself to not feel inept when I don't know how to do very basic things. The fact that I can live and exist without doing them is nice, but it doesn't make me feel any better when I can't. [/ QUOTE ] The only thing I know how to do anymore is search on Google. This makes me one of the smartest people I know. It feels great. |

So does remembering relevant posts and specific phrases from years-ago 2+2 threads to search for and link to them! [/ QUOTE ] I always feel creepy when I know the exact user/keywords to search to find a certain thread. |

Blackjack card-counting, since casinos wised up to it. I don't know that much about it, so I may be way off.

Re: Obsolete Skills
I used to be an expert at pumping gas so the total always landed on an even $$$ amount. Now everywhere is prepay, so it's an obsolete skill.

Re: Obsolete Skills
I know people have made several remarks about the guy not spelling grammar correctly, but spelling is becoming obsolete. I have been fully dependent on computers fixing my spelling errors since I was 10. Compared to someone my age in college from 1950 I am probably a much worse speller. It kinda sucks, but not really.

Philuva, Researching information without the Internet! It's hard to imagine the way we had to write reports looking up stuff in card catalogs and microfilm and stuff at the library. Oh man, that sucked. The difference between being good at that or not was incredible in terms of how long it took to get a report or research paper done. [/ QUOTE ] I'm using microfilm on my report on Abraham Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus. |

Dark room work. I was an avid photographer as a kid, and sometimes did commercial darkroom work as an adult. Now I've got a little $90 Samsung digital, and a bagful of clothes with hypo stains and nowhere to wear them.

Right here in fact: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...umber=10270321 A lot of the stuff in this thread is covered actually and it's a big discussion about whether specialization and technical assistance are good things. |

Try (Wild ass guess) and see what the spell checker says. |
