to say a person can't retire off of $2 Million is what is absolutely retarded..

[/ QUOTE ]

If a 20 year old kid invest 2 million cash, you can easily retire off this amount. If you invest right and get the best brokers in the United States, that 2 mill could be 40 million in 50 years.

It's not like he's gonna put the 2 million in his 0% interest earning checking account....... and sit back and say, "YEP, I'M RETIRED!!!"......

[/ QUOTE ]

Certainly not if he wants to do fun things like this...

Nh. That aside, your faith in brokers is touching but a tad misguided imo. And sure, if you invest right -- i.e. get lucky -- your capital might increase 20-fold over 50 years. What if you underperform the market? (Most investors, amateur and professional, do.) What if the market doesn't increase over the next 50 years?
(You think it can't happen? Take a look at the graph for the last century, focus on some of the 25+ year intervals without improvement, and remember that was a great century for the American economy.)

I could live off 2 million for life and ball out. 4.25% a year in tax free muni bonds = 85k/year. 10k a year on cars, 30k on mortgage, 20k on basic expenses, which leaves 35k a year to Ball out or REINVEST. You guys are crazy if you think 2mil isn't mucho dinero.

Nice try. Thank you for playing.

Current US inflation rate: 2.57%.
Your income for this year, if you want to keep your
capital constant in real terms: $38.6K.
Your income for next year, if ditto: ??

Or you could try inflation-linked bonds: I'll leave it
to you to look up the best tax-free rate you can find.
Bear in mind if you buy long-term i-l bonds you need to reinvest some of the income, otherwise your income will decrease over the years in real terms, even though your capital doesn't.
