[ QUOTE ] What is so great about Eric Clapton? Which great songs that he has recorded did he also write? [/ QUOTE ] I believe you're looking for the Best Songwriters of All Time thread. This is the Best Guitar Players of All Time thread. [/ QUOTE ] Right, in which Cobain could definitely make an appearance, but to include him in this list is absurd. |

IS there anyone that is currently playing that could be in the top 5? I remember someone posting a video of a guy playing that was supposed to be the best ever. Some long haired rock guy. [/ QUOTE ] Not top 5, but Andy McKee is making moves. He's the cat with the harp guitar whose youtube videos blew up. EDIT- Doh, I should read the whole thread first, he's already been mentioned. Well, here's a Mckee - The friend I never met |

Buckethead, quite possibly the most talented guitar player I've ever heard. Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4q3p_o8A6g Kind of a weird intro, but it gets really good ~1:50 [/ QUOTE ] My one pick. Also check out this vid of him playing Nottingham Lace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYxrdrzmuUw Paul Gilbert is also someone who plays not only fast but many styles. He gave Buckethead lessons so that also counts for something! |

Re: Best Guitar Players of All Time
I always liked Warren Haynes. A fairly recent example of an outstanding performance is if you watch the Dave Matthews concert DVD from New York. The song - Cortez the Killer. His hand is moving so fast the camera just sees a blur.

Re: Best Guitar Players of All Time
for these kind of lists you gotta distinguish between best player-of-guitar, and best musician/songwriter/most creative/most historically influential/etc person-who-played-guitar.
In category 1 you got all sorts of shredders, and probably tonnes of people the world has never known, sitting in their bedrooms playing their guitars really well. Category 2 is more important IMO, and the "best guitar player of all time" should be the guy on top of this list, which is hendrix imo. (although there are TONNES of people who can play everything jimi could and more) |

Re: Best Guitar Players of All Time
I like Billy Duffy (The Cult) he would not likely make anyones list... but I am only offering my opinion.
Pat Donahoe is the best guitarist, nobody has ever heard of. Hear him now (not a RickRoll) http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...iendID=9027906 David St Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel (Spinal Tap) Those guys rocked...and thier amps went to eleven. One louder. (joking of course) |

BB King stated the following:"Don't make a mistake about this, Peter Green has more talent in his little finger, then I have in my whole body!" |

as previously mentioned, Randy Rhoads.
I am surprised no-one has listed Tony Iommi yet. May as well throw out a bone for Victor Griffin as well. |

Re: Best Guitar Players of All Time
since there's no such thing as "best" guitar player, I'll make my list "Most Influential Guitar Players To Me":
-John McLaughlin Mahavishnu Orchestra changed my life in high school. -Jimi Hendrix One of two people who had the biggest influence on electric guitar in the last 100 years. (Charlie Christian being the other.) -Wes Montgomerey Best jazz guitarist ever. -Bill Frisell Finds a way to be totally innovative in context. -John Scofield Best jazz guitarist today imo. -Scott Henderson The model for blending jazz and rock. -Marc Ribot So personal and original. His solo on Tom Waits' "Clap Hands" is one of my favorite guitar solos ever. -Dave Fiuczynski A lesser known favorite of mine. I love his emotional attack on guitar. Check out his solo on the Screaming Headless Torsos tune "Kermes Macabre." |
