Re: How much to spend on a nice first car?
I had a $50k BMW at one point and really hated the thing even though it was a nice car. The problem was it just wasn't anything that cool, and if you're spending a lot of money you should get something you realllly like. I just felt like I would have rather gotten a $10,000 Honda or something.
Now I drive the Bentley which after all the work I put into it comes to $200k or so but it's just so ridiculously sick that I'm vvvv pleased with the purchase. Really I have a blast every time I take it for a drive. So basically my advice would be to buy from a dealership that you like and are comfortable with, do not feel rushed into buying something that you just "kinda like" and instead find something that is just too damn sick to not buy. And if nothing gives you that feeling just pick up something cheap. |

N, m: FWIW, I loved Atlanta when I was there in my early 20s.
Clayton: I think getting a 25-30kish range car is a pretty reasonable splurge. |

Re: How much to spend on a nice first car?
Few years back I went on a heater, made like 60k in two months, bought a 32k car(sti). Now, while the car has been a [censored] of fun(Im probably the only sti owner on the planet that has paid for his and actually rallies it), Im not sure Id do it again.
Put me in the "spend 10-15k" and invest the rest camp....however you cant go tooo far wrong spending more....if you need to sell it, sure you lose a few k on depreciaiton, but its not the end of the world. |

Re: How much to spend on a nice first car?
Clayton,
As you know I'm pretty happy with my Honda Civic. I don't know anyone who dislikes the car, and the only people who give me [censored] for it are "ballers". I don't think a car is something worth spending that much money on it. If I'm gonna splurge, I'd rather do it elsewhere. I didn't read the Guids vs Met debate on whether to finance the car or not, but fwiw I took a small loan just so I can establish credit. If you want to buy a house in a few years, should save you a good chunk of change. Also want to repeat the idea that you should save a bit for poker... you playing any smaller than 2/4 makes no sense IMO you aren't a bad player. |

Re: How much to spend on a nice first car?
Clayton,
caution: I am definitely much more conservative than most my age... please take the Zee approach... - keep your POS truck at least until you move out of GA. - don't spend more than 10-12k on a car. imo, balla is retiring when you turn 40. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] You guys realize if you go to a casino at all regularly it becomes a commute and not a business trip which means you can't deduct mileage or car expenses, right? This is actually something that I didn't realize until later, but which definitely most people here don't seem to realize. [/ QUOTE ] not if you're self employed. you can write off all the miles. [/ QUOTE ] No, that is what everyone seems to think but that is entirely untrue. I'm not sure who started getting people to think that way here, but that's not the way it is. Commutes aren't self-employed miles ever. |
