Aha! I expected to see SL_72 reply to that post. He and I were the only ones to post in this thread about me seeing Mew live (with Kasabian).

I agree, clay, they are great.

Yah the album cover has to be a "band" inside joke or something.

Frengers is growing on me as a great great album.

Just read that thread pj. I agree about the wall of sound.

I'll have to admit they are a hard sell. I went to my AIM and spoke with a few friends who respect me musically and its hard to get them on board because of Jonah's (Jonas) voice.

They have some Rhapsody sessions on youtube that are amazing.

Oh boy, indie lovefests! Claunchy, I'll follow your format and post one album at a time. These kinds of threads very easily devolve into listmania.

iLIKETRAINS - Progress - Reform

This one is for anyone loving ambient/orchestral/post-rock. The songs have the same spun-out and somewhat bombastic, apocalyptic feel of Godspeed, but this little album is done in a little over 30 minutes. The lyrics are fairly unusual in that they don't seem to handle typical introspective indie topics. Rather, they take on the perspectives of seemingly random persons, or groups even. In Terra Nova, we have an explorer...

How could I
Have led these men to their demise
And they just follow?
Exploration's last great prize
It wasn't mine

And mores the shame
You will remember my name

Great god this is an awful place [...]

The Beeching Report seems to be a sad lament from a lone railway worker suffering under the Beeching Axe. Until everyone chimes in and chants to Mr. Beeching:

REFORM, REFORM
Oh you are taking apart what we made
With our hands and our hearts
Mr Beeching I put it to you you're driving a stake through the land of our hands and our hearts
further to this there is nothing you can say

A Rook House For Bobby sings from the lonely chess genius Bobby Fischer, The Accident sketches a little scene of an accidental poisoning, Stainless Steel subtly weaves and weaves into a crescendo of enraged murder...

What these topics have in common I don't know. Seemingly random, but the lyrics are very very sharp and appropriately backed by dark, moody, gothic music. If you like anything by Sigur Ros or Godspeed You Black Emperor, I think you'll love this.

Listen here.

Great call on Mew. I was kinda bummed at there live performance and expected more (didn't help that they were curtain jerking for Secret Machines and Bloc Party) the CD's are excellent.

OK, on Neon Bible.

Funeral had 10 songs. I'd say of they broke down like this:

Awesome (4): Tunnels, Power Out, Wake Up
Good (3): Rebellion, Laika, In the Backseat
Meh (1): Une Annee Sans Lumiere
[censored] (2): Crown of Love, 7 Kettles

[/ QUOTE ]

You didn't like Crown of Love? I kinda like it. Also, I think Rebellion (Lies) is by far my favorite song on the album - not because other songs are bad but because it is SO good.

Anyway, I checked out the Fratellis based on this thread and really like their album. Anyone else have any recommendations for faster, higher energy type music? (Say, like the Fratellis, Thermals, Pipettes, Go Team, and such.) I like more ambient or down-tempo stuff just fine but I usually need something livelier to keep me awake when driving long distances.

CMI: The awesomeness of NMH is hardly news to anyone around here but I agree that Aeroplane is the best album I've ever heard.

Out of curiousity does anyone not like NMH? This band/album might deserve its own thread.
