Something just sounds fishy when I hear people say stuff like "Band X's album will probably be my fav when it comes out in 6 months" WTF? Do you really even care whats on the new album? You all ready assume its going to be the best of the year???? Too much indie group think in here for me.

Indie groupthink? In 1967 I'm pretty sure most of us would have been predicting greatness from the next Beatles album. When a great band has more artistic control over what they release (i.e. Indie), then there is a substantially smaller chance of them sucking. I can tell you with some certainty that the new Animal Collective album will be one of the best this year.

1. Panda Bear
2. Of Montreal
3. Shins
4. Twilight Sad
5. Arcade Fire
6. Modest Mouse
7. Besnard Lakes
8. Deerhunter

Isn't Modest Mouse a multiplatinum, heavy-MTV rotation group? Are they still on an independent label, and if so, how much artistic control do they still maintain?

I pick up new music fairly slowly - there are a few albums on here I'd like to check out but I haven't made a purchase for a while. The only thing I'm certain I've listened to from this year was the new Bloc Party album, which was a big disappointment.

I'm curious how many 2007 albums the average respondent to this thread has listened to thus far.

TSC,

I said that I am basically in love with everything the new pornographers have ever made and ranked all 3 of their albums in my top 25 of the last 10 years, including #1 overall and 2 of the top 10. So by that track record it is pretty likely their new album will end up being my favorite of the year.

El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead

Dude is just revolutionizing hip-hop. Crazy album, ridiculous production as always and he is getting better an emcee.

The new Modest Mouse is awful in comparison to their old stuff. Oh well.

I don't get these people who like the new MM stuff (this recent release and good news for people..). Do they like old MM, too? It is so different to me. I'm a huge fan of all of the old Modest Mouse, but I (an MP3 junkie) deleted good news just because it pissed me off. I haven't really been motivated to listen to the new album much because I have a feeling it will achieve the same result.

It's kinda like post-pinkerton weezer for me.

Saw them at Sasquatch. So they're playing some new songs at the time, people are grooving, enjoying the show. They play some of their old stuff, those people are looking around like, WTF IS GOING ON, WHAT IS THIS [censored]. They are not moving, just staring.

Pretty sick stuff. Hell I dont even think they play Cowboy Dan anymore.

Yes, you're correct. They are on a major label. I would never say that being on an indie is a prerequisite for being good or for having artistic integrity, just that it helps :-)
