Two co-workers of mine pronounce "salmon" phonetically. It's like nails on a chalkboard when they say it.

RMJ -- Funniest: I was at dinner, and this wannabe at the table next to ours was trying pretty hard to impress his date. Throughout the night, he was talking loudly about what a baller he was... when the server came by asking about after dinner drinks, he proudly announced, "we'll each have the best cog-nack you serve." [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] nation -- I used to think cognac was pronounced cog-nac for awhile until i heard someone say cone-yak and put two and two together. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] El D -- RMJ: "we'll each have the best cog-nack you serve." hahaha. How do you think he would have responded had they served him two $300 snifters? [/ QUOTE ] I don't know, let's get the truth from the man himself... Nation, so what was your response? -RMJ |

One more I just remembered. In 5th grade, I mispronounced Niger. My teacher thought I was just trying to be cute and sent me to the office. I seriously figured that's where the derogatory term came from. [/ QUOTE ] Sadly, your teacher probably mispronounced it too... It should be pronounced "knee-jerr" as opposed to most people's pronunciation of "Neye-jur" |

Superfluous. I pronounced it super-flew-us, rather than sue-PERF-lew-us, and still do, because it sounds cooler. [/ QUOTE ] Really close to what I do actually. I thought it was super -flow-us. I then found out it wasn't but liked my version better so I still say it that way. |

until I was in college, I pronounced afficianado as 'african-on-dough'. I think I saw a big word, and just took a shot in the dark.

When I was a kid, every time I read the word "awry" I pronounced it "aw-ree" in my head. Luckily, I never had occassion to actually use that word. One day while reading, for some random reason, my brain decided to pronounce it "a-rye" and a lightbulb went off in my head and I knew before going to the dictionary that that was how you pronounce it. [/ QUOTE ] How has this thread gone so long with nobody mentioning epitome? |
