Yes, it was an ice climbing accident. We were climbing a gully on Mt. Washington unroped training for a trip to Alaska and we unleashed an ice damn (water can get trapped behind the ice and build up tremendous pressure and then suddenly let go) which swept my friend down the climb.

It was really a freak accident but if you climb unroped those things can happen. The thing is, without being willing to go unroped on easy ground you will never get up the big alpine climbs we were training for.

Although it's dangerous, 50% of the ice climbers you've known being killed is a very high number. Were you close to any of them? I've lost 3 friends ice climbing and each time it was a solo accident and very sad but that's still a tiny fraction of the ice climbers I know.

This is getting kinda morbid so I want to add that the people I've known who have died climbing probably lived fuller lives than most people who live into their old age. They understood and accepted the risks.

I'm semi retired from solo ice climbing at the moment until my daughter gets older and probably for good actually.

I had mine set to auto-upgrade, I set it to manual update now.
