I am in philosophy and clearly realize that your income in no way determines how meaningful your life is. I think education level though does have some effect on meaning. At least you are coming to a conscious decision to expand your mind and learn about different world views. I also did not intend to say that if you're poor, your life has no meaning. That couldn't be farther from the truth.

I don't know how you would measure the average level of education between two different cities but I would be interested to know what the results would be (though not willing to wager on it, I don't make prop bets as a general rule).

BTW, my narrow definition of townie includes mostly people that I meet/observe on the street downtown at night or gambling at the local casino rather than the person working in some random store on princess or teaching high school math. I guess it's an expression that I've picked up here from other queen's people. If I am just using that narrow definition of townie, I think it's fair to say that there are a fair amount of desperate, uneducated, aggressive, addicts out there who aren't really doing anything meaningful with their life.
