Re: OT: [censored] thread, OCTOBER, READ RULES IN TOP POST
vers,
I was being sarcastic. It is quite obvious from your posts you are a pretty stereotypical leftist student. |

Re: OT: [censored] thread, OCTOBER, READ RULES IN TOP POST
It's hard to judge sarcasm... Also I didn't quite grasp it because most people I initially talk to stereotype me as a conservative (probably b/c I'm pretty individualistic/am not in social organizations).
I'm not sure how stereotypically leftist I am b/c I am not part of any social justice movements/protests. Also I don't live in a housing co-op. I don't have a Che Guevara t-shirt or dreadlocks. In short I guess I'd make an individualistic argument for social welfare based on autonomy. I don't think that's stereotypical at all. Obviously I like to argue about politics... |

I also realize how many of these problems are social problems that should be remedied by the Ontario/federal gov't but have yet to be corrected. Crime is likely high and people's dreams go unfulfilled largely b/c cost of living is expensive and unreasonable and our social welfare system isn't adequate. [/ QUOTE ] Wow. This might be the most misguided thing I have ever read. |

Re: OT: [censored] thread, OCTOBER, READ RULES IN TOP POST
vers, I'd just like to point out you are a university student. To this point in your life, you've probably done far less on your own with regards to earning respect then the average adult living in Kingston.
How much money you make, the sq. footage of your house, the car you drive, and your education level are all meaningless measurements for defining whether or not you are doing any thing with your life. Also, I would be willing to wager a lot that the average level of education for a Kingston resident is >> the average level of education of a Toronto resident. |

Re: OT: [censored] thread, OCTOBER, READ RULES IN TOP POST
FYI, I am in the process of getting some essays published.
I am in philosophy and clearly realize that your income in no way determines how meaningful your life is. I think education level though does have some effect on meaning. At least you are coming to a conscious decision to expand your mind and learn about different world views. While I am still young, I have large intentions that will be carried out, doesn't that mean anything at all? I don't really care about earning other people's respect. I also did not intend to say that if you're poor, your life has no meaning. That couldn't be farther from the truth. I don't know how you would measure the average level of education between two different cities but I would be interested to know what the results would be (though not willing to wager on it, I don't make prop bets as a general rule). BTW, my narrow definition of townie includes mostly people that I meet/observe on the street downtown at night or gambling at the local casino rather than the person working in some random store on princess or teaching high school math. I guess it's an expression that I've picked up here from other queen's people. If I am just using that narrow definition of townie, I think it's fair to say that there are a fair amount of desperate, uneducated, aggressive, addicts out there who aren't really doing anything meaningful with their life. |
