The Bengals have a crummy defense but I guess that's obvious.

[/ QUOTE ]

ya, and isnt defense supposed to by mlewis's strongpoint?

i would gladly take coughlin or herm edwards. i mean, id be ecstatic to get those guys. even norv turners is an obv upgrade. unless youve watched the bungles consistently [censored] up endgame scenarios, you proly dont realize how bad lewis is.

ive been checking major media writeups and no one, NOT ONE SINGLE ARTICLE has mentioned that lewis had could have challenged the a) obv fumble, b) atrocious spot, but instead simply called timeout.

ill say it. the media doesnt criticize lewis bc all the talking heads are afraid to criticize a black coach.

Yes they did. You think Isiah Thomas is getting a free pass? Wake up, it's not the 1980s anymore...

Brian Billick was supposed to be an offensive genius, too.

I think it's more that his arrival coincided with the franchise's turnaround. From 1991-2002, the Bengals had 11 seasons below .500 and since Lewis took over in 2003 they've been .500 or above in each season. He got a pass because of the historical ineptitude that preceded him.

Carson Palmer is the main reason for the turnaround, of course. The defense has not improved much from the woeful days of 2-14, 4-12, etc and that is supposed to be Marvin Lewis's sphere of influence.

Ya, statistically he was only average pre-Moss era. The offense immediately became a top 2 offense w/ Randy.

If it helps I like the drafts under Childress.

Some people mentioned guys that aren't coaching anymore but I think you want current head coaches. Of the proven losers I have to agree with the Norv Turner, Herm Edwards sentiment.

[/ QUOTE ]

Herm has taken 2 mediocre teams to the playoffs, one without his starting QB last year for 11 games.

They held the SB Champs without a TD for over 39 mins, at Indy, and picked off Manning 3x. Oooh, you lost to the best team in football...you suck!

In 2004, he won 11 games and took a team that had to start Brooks Bollinger/Quincy Carter 3x, due to another injured QB to the playoffs, had the 4th best D, went on the road and defeated the SD Chargers, and lost by a measly 3 points to a 15-1 Steelers team in Pittsburgh, because his kicker couldn't hit a game-winning kick to save his life. Twice.

You guys are silly Simmons fanbois to keep repeating this. Herm has had bad clock mgmt, like Reid, like Dungy, like Norv, like Holmgren and a lot of other NFL head coaches. He's not remotely as bad as Norv, Richie the K, Ray Rhodes, Dick Jauron and some others.

It's like idiots who say Marty can't coach because Earnest Byner fumbled at the 1, and Lin Elliott missed not 2, not 3, but 4 FGs at home in the playoffs at Arrowhead.

Simmons was talking about his ability to inspire a football team, He said a football player would not be inspired by his play

[/ QUOTE ]

1) Simmons has no clue what actually inspires NFL players in the locker room. But if you actually *read* what NFLers say about him, it is clear they are inspired by him, just like Dungy's players are, and Vermeil's players were.

2) I guaran-DAMM-tee you that winning $$$ in casinos is something that gets 90%+ players excited, whether it be them or their coaches doing it. Just like most people.

Fanbois need to stop sucking Simmons cocksicle.

Carson Palmer is the main reason for the turnaround, of course.

[/ QUOTE ]

Popular notion but wrong. The main reason for the turnaround was that they had arguably the single best draft of the modern era in 2001.

Round 1: Pick #3 Justin Smith
Round 2: Pick #36 Chad Johnson
Round 4: Pick #100 Rudi Johnson
Round 7: Pick #204 T.J. Houshmandzadeh

Landing 4 long term starters in one draft got them to mediocrity before Carson Palmer ever took a snap in an NFL game.
