The point is sometimes you just throw the * out and give some smart arse remark. With no timetable of when the poster might lose their * of shame. Where you could say "here's your * next time read sticky. Be a good boy/girl for a month and it'll go away."

Last time I read the sticky about the * it never says when one might lose their *. It only says if you do something really good one day you might get it back.

But nowhere does it say how long the * stays there. One person said they havn't sucked for 6 months (I understand that's their opinion) and they still have their *.

So how long does it stay and should you be notified when you receive one as to why you did receive it?

Agree that posters should always be PM'd why they got a star. Otherwise, how are they going to know not to do the exact same thing and get two more and be outta here without ever knowing why?

I think these two go together. Seeing someone else's star is cautionary and helps maintain community standards; nobody is going to see someone else's PM and learn from it not to make the same mistake.

I'm not sure that is a bad thing. How many star-worthy posters do we need? If a star-worthy poster gets pouty and decides to take his ball and go home, is it really a loss worth worrying much about?

Lots of people have lost their stars, or gotten one and just kept posting. I dunno that someone possibly having an emo reaction is reason enough to change a policy.
