BEAT: One of the Worst Days of my Life

Hey hey, can you blame me for being lazy? Uhh, does anyone want to write something so heavy at 8 in the morning?

But to be fair, Danny did most of the typing...I just thought out loud from my spot on my futon.

We get to the church and there are a ton of Boy Scouts there. You have to understand, my whole family was very involved in scouting (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venture, and Sea Scouts...actually I've been involved in all of those areas), and my dad was a beloved scoutmaster. So we get to the church and there's a long line of Boy Scouts waiting outside the door, standing at attention. As my dad's casket is carried in, the Scouts salute and stay that way as my dad and then the rest of my family follow. Some of these boys and their parents have watched me grow up, and to see them all do that...well, I can't tell you how much I choked up.

Danny's dad is actually a deacon (which is almost like a priest except you can be married) and he was a very big part of the ceremony. Danny's family was so close to me before this happened, but now I feel like both our families have melded together this past week, so that's a plus.

I give my eulogy and I didn't cry. I was quite proud of that. I started crying in church when I stood up to applaud my dad.


The strangest thing happened on the way to the funeral, though. Someone calls my house as we're about to leave and asks for my brother, who's 18 and just graduated from high school. It's chaotic and no one knows where my brother is and so my uncle takes the call and says my brother's busy, can he take a message? It turns out it was an ARMY RECRUITER wanting to know, of all things, if my brother was interested in ENLISTING. Of course, not realizing that they were calling the house of a patriarch who died in one of their bases this past week.
Of all the phone calls to come through (and believe me, we've gotten so many. Because of this week, I hate cell phones, ring tones, hearing my name called every 5 seconds, and Alexander Graham Bell for inventing phones) five minutes before we were supposed to leave, it was that one. My uncle thinks that it was really like my dad was trying to send a little sign, a little funny joke on us to let us know that he is still watching.
