One piece of advice to all of you that have free antivirus, firewalls, etc...

[/ QUOTE ]

Absolute bollocks. AVG Free is far better than either McAfee or Norton, the expensive alternatives.

[/ QUOTE ]

At this point, I question some super-duper $10,000,000 dollar software protection that is 10,000 times better than anything ever made, protecting your FT account from getting hacked.

<< FWIW - Stars really needs to do something like this too.

i ONLY log-in to Stars from my own computer.
I never log-in from somebody else's computer.
I want the f'ing option "Do NOT allow log-ins from any computer except this one" >>

I'm for this as well. If I am not mistaken, Crypto did/does this. I recall having problems with my cable modem and trying to connect using dial-up. It wouldn't let me access any account information or play.

I agree, at least about comparing it to Norton. Norton is garbage that'll probably hurt your computer more than help it. With McAfee, while I've never used it, I've heard very mixed reviews.

NOD32 and Kaspersky are the two best, IMHO. Neither are free, but they are top-of-the-line in terms of protection and speed.

Of course, anti-viruses are generally pretty overrated, as viruses aren't all over the internet (well, yes they are, but it really depends on what you do online). But when you do come across one, it's always a nice feeling to see your software doing it's job.

On topic: FTP really DOES need to get their act together, IMHO. Between their lack of security features, mega lag, and slow customer support, I'm amazed it's as popular of a poker room as it is. I still play there as my #1 site, and I will probably continue to do so, but I would like to see some changes. However, I must say that ever since FTPDoug started doing his Answer threads, there HAVE been improvements. Doug, I think I speak on behalf for most of 2+2 that your posts are greatly appreciated even though you don't always answer all the "tough questions".

There is one legitimate reason for a remote login: internet outages. Smart players have a list of "emergency contacts" for situations where their internet goes out. Backup connections might work as long as the outage is not the result of a common fault, but the best backup is to have someone in a completely different part of the world on standby. Worst case, I can jam a few text messages through a busted cell phone system after a moderate earthquake to some friends 1000 miles away to salvage something from $1000-worth of SNG equity I might have open.

Security could still be improved vastly by not allowing any remote buy-ins. Log in and play on my account all you want, but you're limited to money I've already put on the table.

this is a legitimate concern, but can't FTP do SOMETHING to increase security when someone's account is being used on another IP? Security questions, only allowing player to continue playing with money already on the table, etc.

Anybody ever packet sniffed what is moving across the network with FT?

[/ QUOTE ]
Pretty sure that all the information is encrypted with SSL. I was packet sniffing the other day (for another reason) and there didn't appear to be any useful information in the packets.

there should be a feature where if your account is being used from an IP address other than yours you have to answer a few security questions first (ie your HS mascot, your first grade teacher, etc)

[/ QUOTE ]

Your IP address is not a reliable indicator of your location. You do not own "your" IP address. Even on DSL or cable, it is leased to you through DHCP and can change at a moment's notice if the DHCP lease expires.

This is true, but a MAC address would work perfectly, I believe.

microbob,

the players he lost it to were not in on it.

it would not be fair to take it away from them.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, but Full Tilt does make a decent chunk of money. I think they'd be able to reimburse this guy $350 or so for his loss that is obv not his fault. They've acknowledged that the account was logged in from Pittsburgh where he obv doesn't live.

Oh sorry..Full Tilt doesn't use common sense when it comes to security issues.

Giving a refund is probably a bad idea. Then you'd have a bunch of situations were Person A on the west coast has $500 in an account. He calls up Person B on the east coast, gives login info and tells him to take a shot at 10/20NL. Run good, split profit. Busto, claim account is hacked and get refunded.

Better to make sure it never happens in the first place, by only allowing your account to be accessed from a specific computer.
